A carpet is a floor or stair covering usually made from textile or thick fabric, and typically shaped to fit a floor surface. Carpets usually consist of an upper layer of a pile attached to a backing. Since the early 90s, the use of wool as carpet pile has greatly reduced with manufacturers preferring synthetic materials such as polypropylene, nylon, polyester as their choice materials in making carpets. This fundamental change in approach to manufacturing and production of carpets can be largely attributed to the cheap cost of synthetic materials as compared to wool. The term “carpet” is often used interchangeably with the term “rug”, although the term “carpet” can be applied to a stair or floor covering of an entire house, whereas a “rug” generally does not stretch more than a room, and traditionally only cover some part of floor surface and not wall-to-wall.
Although carpets are generally used for decorative purposes, they can also be used for other purposes such as insulation of feet against cold tiles, comfortability, etc.
